The Grand Northern Loop

Traveling the North by road is the only way to truly grasp the scale of Ethiopia’s geography. From the 1,400-meter depths of the Blue Nile Gorge to the high-altitude plateaus of Tigray, every kilometer offers a window into the local way of life.

01

Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar (560 km)

A long but rewarding day of driving on completely paved roads. The highlight is the Blue Nile Gorge, featuring a spectacular 1,400m descent and ascent.

Must-See: Gish Abay (The geographic source of the Blue Nile).
Full Day Paved
02

Bahir Dar to Gondar (175 km)

The Land Route

A short 2.5-hour drive through fertile fields. Stop at the Awramba Community to see their unique model of gender equality and social innovation.

The Water Alternative

Cross Lake Tana by boat to Gorgora. Visit the ruins of Emperor Suysonos' palace and the beautifully painted Debre Maryam Monastery.

03

Gondar to Axum: The High Peaks

"Valleys Deep, Mountains High"

This is the most dramatic leg of the journey. As you descend to the Tekeze River (850m), keep an eye out for the majestic Baobab trees—a sure sign you've dipped below the 1,000m mark.

Note: The 40km stretch between Debark and Zarema remains the only unpaved section.
